With the overwhelming increase in both cost of living and gentrification of traditional Austin neighborhoods, it is my strong conviction that our local city government should move forward with plans to provide for affordable housing projects to preserve our shrinking community.

Plans such as this have received widespread community support, and many drafts of potential plans have been shown to be both popular and implementable. For instance, the People’s Plan is once such proposed solution that even local politicians ostensibly support, yet they still to this day have failed to make actionable moves to have the plan put into practice in the city while our community continued to lose ground to skyrocketing property taxes.

The failure of local politicians (most notable recently being councilman Greg Casar) to make good on plans the community has supported has served to further divide the community even more, with many of those affected greatest by the changes in property taxes facing an ever looming threat of losing their homes and livelihoods. The massive increases our community has been experiencing in these rates demands that our local government act swiftly, before our community is irrevocably changed.
